Description

In the world of residential solar and EV charging, space is the ultimate luxury. Commercial barriers often waste home space. They create trip hazards and block car doors. The MAD Safety 63mm surface mount battery bollard solves this compliance headache. It offers a slim, 3mm thick galvanised steel barrier. This satisfies electrical inspectors and keeps the garage functional.

Why a Dedicated Battery Bollard Ensures Compliance

AS/NZS 5139:2019 sets strict rules for battery energy storage systems (BESS). Installers must protect units in “vehicle movement zones” from impact. A physical barrier is mandatory if an inspector anticipates vehicle damage. Without a compliant battery bollard, you risk a withheld Certificate of Electrical Safety (CES). You also face costly return visits.

Master the "Trailing Edge" Rule

Installers often make the mistake of using a single central post. Solar Victoria certifiers expect protection across the entire “exclusion zone.” You must protect both the leading and trailing edges of the unit. Using a pair of low-profile battery bollards gives you total coverage. It also prevents the garage from looking like a warehouse.

Heavy-Duty Engineering, Residential Aesthetic

Don’t let the slim 63mm profile fool you. We build this battery bollard from high-grade galvanised steel. It also features a heavy-duty 6mm thick base plate.

Key features include:

  • Impact Deflection: Protects the integrity of sensitive lithium-ion cells.
  • High Visibility: Safety Yellow finish stands out clearly during the day.
  • Dual Protection: Safeguards both the BESS unit and the vehicle.

Does a brick garage pillar count as mechanical protection?

It can, but only within a strict 1:2.5 ratio zone as outlined by Solar Victoria. For example, a 500mm wide brick pillar only creates a protected shadow of 1250mm along the wall. If your battery is mounted further back than this protected zone, an additional surface-mount bollard is mandatory to pass inspection.

Does AS/NZS 5139 mandate a specific height for the bollard?

While the standard mandates “mechanical protection,” it does not specify an exact height. However, 900mm is the industry standard as it ensures the barrier is visible in a vehicle’s mirrors and sits high enough to protect the central mass of wall-mounted battery units against higher vehicles like SUVs and utes.

Can I use a rubber wheel stop instead of a bollard?

In some specific scenarios with deep garages, a heavy-duty rubber wheel stop placed on the floor can prevent vehicle tires from advancing. However, wheel stops do not prevent long vehicle overhangs (like a ute tray) from backing into a wall-mounted inverter. A vertical steel bollard provides definitive, unquestionable impact protection.

Do EV Chargers require the same protection?

Yes. While AS/NZS 5139 governs battery storage, general wiring rules and local distribution guidelines increasingly require mechanical protection for any high-voltage EV wall chargers installed in vehicle impact zones.
